Questions

What people ask us before they ask for help

Getting help

Who qualifies for help?

Parents and spouses with a family law problem whose household income is too high for free legal aid and too low for a private lawyer. We ask a few questions about income and household size on the first call.

Do I need to bring anything to the first visit?

No. If you have papers from the court, bring them. If you don’t, we’ll tell you what to gather.

What if you can’t take my case?

We’ll say so and suggest where to go next, whether that’s another clinic, a private lawyer, or the self-help office at the courthouse.

Cost

How much will it cost?

It depends on your income and household size. We agree on the fee in writing before we start. Court costs are separate.

Can I pay over time?

Often, yes. We’ll talk through a monthly amount you can manage when we agree on your fee.

Privacy and safety

Is what I tell you private?

Yes. Our lawyers keep what you tell them confidential. Please don’t send confidential details through the website forms.

How do I read this site safely?

Use the Leave this site button at the top of any page, and clear your history afterward if someone else can see your device.

Your case

Can both spouses use the clinic?

Not for the same case. A lawyer can advise only one side. If you agree on everything, each of you can ask for help separately.

Will I have to go to court?

Some cases settle without a hearing, and some can’t. We tell you early which one yours looks like, so you can plan time off work.

Do you take cases outside family law?

No. We take divorce, parenting time, support, protective orders and adoption, and we refer other cases to clinics that handle them.

Is your question missing?

Ask it. A lawyer reads every message.
